Richardson backs renewable-fuel incentives

Rockwell City, Ia. - Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson said Sunday he would back tax breaks and government financing to help renewable energy entrepreneurs shift America's energy focus from oil and nuclear power to renewable sources.

"I would have (renewable energy entrepreneurs) get access to government financial loans at a very, very generous rate," Richardson said. "I would have them get tax incentives to hire people, to purchase technology and equipment."

He said he would foster growth in the renewable energy industry as a means of reducing the country's dependency upon foreign oil.

Gregg Heide, 49, of Pomeroy said renewable energy ranks at the top of his list of issues going into the presidential election. Heide asked Richardson about his stance on renewable energy following the governor's remarks and said he was pleased by Richardson's response.

"I can tell he's well-versed on the issue," he said.
